Kornegay Recognized for Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief
A South Dakota Wing Civil Air Patrol cadet, Cadet Captain Miles Kornegay, has received a CAP National Commander’s Commendation for disaster relief services related to Hurricane Ian in Florida in 2022.
Kornegay was part of a nation-wide CAP team that analyzed before and after photos of storm damage for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, each working from their home bases.
The South Dakota Wing cadet is a member of CAP’s Lookout Mountain Composite Squadron, in Spearfish. Florida Wing, CAP, activated a full incident management team when the category 4 hurricane came ashore near Fort Myers, Florida. Over 250 air and 100 ground photography sorties resulted in 116,000 damage assessment photos submitted to FEMA.
CAP Geographical Information Systems team members across the country, including Kornegay, used ArcGIS software to compare before and after photos to help FEMA determine disaster relief needs. For his work on Hurricane Ian, Kornegay also earned a CAP Disaster Relief ribbon to be worn on his dress uniform.
