Civil Air Patrol to survey storm damage, fire risk in north-central Nebraska

VALENTINE, Neb. — The Civil Air Patrol is conducting an aerial survey over north-central Nebraska Tuesday following severe weather that moved through the region Monday night.

Cherry and Keya Paha County Emergency Manager Jessica Coyle shared details of the flight with Cherry County commissioners during their Tuesday meeting. She said the mission will assess potential storm damage and check for fires sparked by lightning.

Coyle noted that at least one fire was reported in Keya Paha County following the storm.

The flight is expected to cover a wide area, stretching from southern South Dakota through the Niobrara River valley, including Merritt Reservoir and parts of eastern Rock County.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency approved and is funding the aerial survey.
