South Dakota Wing Trains with SDANG

February 15, 2022

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.– South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol, recently assisted the South Dakota Air National Guard’s 114th Fighter Wing’s training for intercepting small aircraft. The training took place during the evening and night of January 25 over southcentral South Dakota.

The exercise featured F-16s from the 114th FW locating and intercepting a single-engine propeller-driven CAP Cessna 182. The CAP aircraft simulated an aircraft that was violating restricted airspace.

“Our CAP aircraft are the logical choice for Air Guard simulated intercept training,” said Col. Michael Marek, CAP South Dakota Wing commander. “Intercepting unidentified aircraft is part of the Air Guard mission, but many such aircraft fly much more slowly than usual for the guard. Our CAP aircraft and experienced pilots make an ideal simulated intruder, as the F-16 pilots train for intercepting slower aircraft. CAP is proud to support this safe and effective intercept training.”

Both CAP, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force, and the SDANG, are part of the USAF’s “Total Force.” The training with the SDANG is a highlight for SDWG CAP aircrew members.

“General aviation pilots account for the majority of restricted airspace violations around the world,” said SDWG mission pilot trainee 2nd Lt. Thor Bardon. “Participating in this exercise as a simulated violator was an excellent opportunity to witness the professionalism of the SDANG and their dedication to safer skies for everyone.”

The SDANG and SDWG typically engage in these interception training simulations once or twice a year.
