July 17, 2025, marked the official kickoff and introduction of the newly reformed Aberdeen Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The event was attended by members of the new squadron, South Dakota Wing leadership, and visiting senior members and cadets from neighboring units.
Aberdeen has a Civil Air Patrol squadron, again! After a 12-year gap, the Aberdeen Composite Squadron (NCR-SD-020) was officially rechartered on May 8. To gain status as a composite squadron, the community must have a minimum of 15 current or new CAP members to form the unit. The state CAP commander then approves a formal request to CAP national headquarters for activation of the unit.
South Dakota Wing, Civil Air Patrol, has received a rare National Commander’s Unit Citation award. The award, recognizing four notable accomplishments during 2024, was presented at CAP’s joint South Dakota Wing and North Central Region conference, May 3 in Spearfish.
